Welcome to Bovalls Dörrbyggeri!
GENERAL
Modular dimensions are a simplification of the outside measurement of the frame of the door because the exact frame dimension differs slightly between different brands.
Our exterior doors are for example 10×21 = 990×2083 mm Our outside measurement for an internal door is at for example at 9×21=888x2090mm and at 8×21=788×2090 mm.
The outside measurement is the measurement of the frame, width x height. The opening measurements in the facade should be about 15 mm larger than the outer frame dimension.
The outside measurement is the measurement of the frame, width x height. If you already have a door, it can be easier to measure the existing door.
A right-hung door has the hinges on the right side when you stand on the outside (where the hinges are visible) and opens the door towards you. A left-hung door has hinges on the left side
Everyone is welcome to shop with us.
We also sell our doors through selected retailers, timber merchants and builders.
The exterior door models Saltö and Smögen are only sold via our webshop.

When renovating, review the daylight in the house before ordering new interior doors.
Everyone knows that windows are important for the daylight in a villa. Keep in mind that it is also possible to increase the light with interior doors. If, for example, you have a slightly darker hallway, you can put glass doors into a brighter room to let the light continue into the hall. If you want privacy, you can use ornamental glass or etched glass. Try opening and closing the existing door to see how it affects the daylight in the room.
When you order an interior door from Bovalls, it is delivered complete with frame and any oak threshold of our stock items (standard, wet room or threshold plate). Door levels and key rosette are ordered separately. What frames, veneers and fittings are included can be found in the webshop under the tab “product fact” under the product selected.
DELIVERY
We ship our doors with a carrier appointed by us. They call you before delivery so they know for sure that someone can receive the goods. Keep in mind that the drivers leave the goods at the plot boundary. Carrying the doors inside, putting them in a garage or truck unloading, etc. is not included in their tasks.
We deliver to Norway, with a carrier appointed by us. They call you before delivery so they know for sure that someone can receive the goods. Keep in mind that the drivers leave the goods at the plot boundary. Carrying the doors inside, putting them in a garage or truck unloading, etc. is not included in their tasks.
When delivering to Norway, Swedish VAT is not invoiced, you pay Norwegian VAT instead. We hire an agent, Ecus, who handles all our customs matters. Ecus will contact you (if you do not have a customs credit) for payment of import VAT. If you order online, this will be handled automatically by us.
We sell mainly to customers in Sweden and Norway but sometimes to other EU countries.
HARDWARE & LOCKS
Instead of just one knob on the inside of the door, you have both a knob and a cylinder. With this solution, it is possible to prevent a burglar who has entered the house, e.g. through a window, to open the door as an escape route alternatively uses the door as an exit to carry out valuables such as furniture.
MATERIALS
When we write that a frame is made of e.g. solid oak, it means that the frame only consists of oak. All our solid wood doors for expample Ramsö, Råssö and Tjärnö consist only of wood and glass, no HDF material. See how our doors are built.
FSC® stands for the Forest Stewardship Council, which is an independent, international member organization dedicated to environmentally-friendly, socially responsible and economically viable use of the world’s forests through its FSC certification system.
Read more about FSC on “Types and origins of our wood” under “about Bovalls” or go directly to FSC.org.
Oak has been used extensively in both boat and door manufacturing throughout the ages. Oak is hard and rot-resistant with distinct, beautiful veins. Its only disadvantage is that it is a bright wood and if you want to keep it bright outdoors, it requires more maintenance than a darker type of wood. More info about oak and how it should be maintained can be found on the page “Maintenance & installation”.
Freijo is a Brazilian wood that is very reminiscent of teak in color and density. We use it most in frames and solid frame doors.
Some wood, such as our Freijo, is taken from natural forests. In an FSC-marked forest, you must not harvest more than the forest can reproduce naturally. See picture ”7 years after low impact logging”. Other types of wood, such as the FSC-labeled teak, come from plantations
These types of wood are both hard and stable. Teak is one of the most durable woods in the world. Freshly sawn teak is very variegated and is brown with hints of black, green and pink. However, the color is evened out by sunlight very quickly.
Freijo has a beautiful structure that does not even as quickly as teak but gives life and character to the door throughout its life. Freijo is a little lighter and more yellow in tone and teak is a little darker and more red in tone. Freshly sawn Freijo is like the teak variegated but slowly evens out from daylight or sun.
Most of our interior doors are made of oak or ash We oil the oak and the ash is often painted white. We also build some interior doors in walnut, which is a very beautiful type of wood. See photos for inspiration on interiors.
If the interior is to be the same type of wood or color straight through, we usually recommend that you let the interior doors contrast against the rest of the interior. For example, it is common to have oak floors at home. If you also have, for example, stairs and furniture in oak, it can be too much with even interior doors in oak. It can be nice to pick another type of wood We think it’s nice with contrasts! If all the interior is all white, it can be nice with a wooden door.

The largest volume that we consume annually is pine from Sweden. The ash is Swedish and we also buy oak from Sweden in the first place, otherwise the oak is from Europe.
But! If there is no demand for forest from the southern hemisphere, the forest will have no value and it will be cut down in favor of something more profitable, such as monocultures of palm oil or soy. It’s an ecological disaster every time it happens.
There is only one reason why Sweden is largely covered by forest and that is because our forest is profitable for forest owners. Just as in Sweden, forests in the southern hemisphere are largely owned by farmers and they must earn something on their land.
If the farmer/landowner can use his forest in a sustainable way and sell sawn timber products to environmentally conscious customers, we believe that the environmental benefit far exceeds the emissions from shipping.
Foreign types of wood can also have other properties than the domestic ones, which means that you do not have to paint or treat the surface with, for example, rot protection.
Remember that although modified or preserved wood approaches the properties of tropical wood, it requires processing of the wood. To increase the performance of softwood, for example, substances are added or the wood is heated at a high temperature. Modification sometimes also requires specific conifer species, which still have to be imported from far away. All this has a negative impact on the environment.
Tropical hardwood does not need that extra treatment, is naturally strong, has a long life and is also sustainable for people, animals and the planet. Because by choosing certified tropical wood, you also stimulate sustainable management and thus protection of our most vulnerable forests.
Just like meat, coffee or energy, it is good to look at all circumstances and not just the price tag. f you care about people, animals and the planet or welfare, a low price expressed in money is done in no time. But what is the real cost? What happens when you calculate the actual cost of non-certified.
Because this choice means that the risk of damage to climate and biodiversity can hardly be expressed in monetary terms.
Is FSC wood more expensive? Or is other wood simply too cheap? This becomes apparent when calculating the actual costs of using non-certified timber.

Since the transport takes place by ship, which transports thousands of containers of timber, the environmental impact per kilometer is considerably lower than transport by truck. There is no denying that tropical wood comes from far away, traveling many kilometers before being used in a lock gate, bridge or construction. This often translates into high CO2 emissions. Nevertheless, the environmental impact is not so bad, as shown by environmental calculations.
It is not only the kilometers that are important, but also the means of transport. Have you ever seen a truck with 8000 containers? Transport by ship is much cleaner per kilometer than by truck.
The environmental damage caused by transport is determined by both the distance and the method of transport. This calculation example shows that transporting softwood from Europe can sometimes even have a higher environmental impact than wood from tropical areas.
The use of FSC tropical wood has a positive climate effect in two respects. It is an alternative to polluting materials and it also protects the forest, which plays a decisive role in combating climate change.
The production of materials for the construction industry accounts for 11 percent of global energy and process-related emissions. About half of all concrete, brick and steel goes to the construction industry. If we do nothing, the increasing global demand for housing will cause huge CO2 emissions from materials such as concrete, steel and glass. While wood, including tropical wood, stores CO2 during growth. A lot of CO2 is released when manufacturing steel, concrete or plastic. In addition, choose tropical FSC wood because then no forest dies. The forest will be preserved precisely because it must not be turned into a plantation for soy or palm oil.
Logging is not the main cause of deforestation or climate change. By choosing tropical FSC wood, you ensure that the forest continues to exist.
20 years ago, intact tropical forests still stored 17 percent of man-made emissions. Forests lost about 25 percent of their area, while global emissions increased by 46 percent. Intact tropical forests are a crucial storage for CO2 and play a key role in the fight against climate change. In the forests managed by FSC, 99 trees grow for every tree harvested that absorbs CO2 again. By using certified tropical wood, you prevent the use of building materials that emit a lot of CO2 and you stop the felling of tropical forests (to make way for soy or palm oil), which counteracts climate change.
There are two reasons for using tropical wood. Certified tropical wood is a very environmentally friendly material that often surpasses the properties of local wood.
It often has a longer lifespan. 35 to 50 years is the rule rather than the exception. And 100% circular. In addition, the choice of tropical FSC wood leads to the protection of very vulnerable forests and their inhabitants, people and animals. After all, FSC forest may not be felled for soy or oil palm plantations. The forest remains a forest by choosing tropical wood more often.
Permits have been granted for the felling of legal timber, but this says little about how the forest is managed. In some cases, the forest even disappears completely!
You place a facade or a garden deck. As long as it’s legal tropical wood it’s fine. Wood is wood, right? Is the forest managed sustainably? Is there child labour? Do the locals benefit from it? Will poachers be stopped? Protect the animals?
If the forest is FSC certified, strict rules are applied that guarantee the preservation of biological diversity and ensure that people who live and work in the forest are treated with respect. Legal timber does not provide such guarantees.
Permission has been granted for the felling. That’s all. And that is far too little. The legal is just not good enough.
MAINTENANCE
It depends on the type of wood and how exposed the door is. You will find our maintenance instructions under “Maintenance & Installation”.
It depends on the type of wood and how exposed your door is. We use “Jotun Optimal Window and door”. If you are unsure, ask your paint dealer for advice.
See instruction “Facts and maintenance oak” under “Maintenance & installation”.
See instruction “Facts and maintenance ash” under “Maintenance & installation”.
Oiled doors are not finished; they must be maintained as not to be discolored and ugly but also not to absorb moisture with swelling as a result. If the wood dries out, it absorbs moisture and swells. This causes the door to warp and there can be problems with both tightness and closing. Depending on the location of the door and the climate, the door may need to be oiled several times a year. A door does not turn as gray as wooden furniture or a terrace. The door is usually protected a bit by the roof at the top and retains its brown color but can become gray and black at the bottom where it is more exposed to rain.
OUR DOORS
Jamb extension is a groove on the inside of the frame where you mount an extension as the wall often is thicker than the frame. The groove for a Jamb extension is an option and is not standard on our doors.
No, we do not make veneered exterior doors because we know that a veneered door is extra sensitive outdoors. We only make solid exterior doors and doors with solid panels. We build exterior doors for our own climate on the Swedish west coast and doors that are “maintainable”.
Our exterior doors are painted in any NSC color with Jotun Optimal Window and door. However, we do not recommend dark painted doors in sunny locations because the exterior door can get extremely hot and you can get troubles with opening/closing the door.
A black-painted wooden door gets incredibly hot if it is in direct sunlight. Wood is a living material and a door that is black becomes so hot that the door leaf can warp and then you can have problems with the opening and closing the door correctly.
If you want a door with a side light, we build this in the same frame. The design is better and it gives more daylight as you only need one mullion. The door section also becomes easier to install. We can build a door and side light in the same frame up to size 20x21M
The aluminum sheets are in the construction to avoid warping. The inside of the door gets dry and warm and the wood shrinks while the metal sheet expands. On the outside of the door, the wood swells and the metal sheet shrink from the cold. The movements counteract each other.
No, you do not have to. If you want only the door leaves to contrast, for example against a light interior, you can have white-painted frames for interior doors. It is quite common to let the frame “melt into” the wall.
Yes, we can manufacture extensions according to your wishes (as long as we have the materials required). Please contact us and we will assist you
