THE SPIRIT OF THE 30´S
The 1930´s were a turbulent decade that began with a worldwide depression and ended with the start of World War II. During this time, Sweden received better unemployment insurance and the right to vacation. Retirees received better pensions. During the 1930´s, sound films could be seen in cinemas and radio listening gained momentum. Motoring began to spread in the 1930´s.
ARCHITECTURE IN THE 1930´S
FUNCTIONALISM. The “funkis” style makes its entrance in the 30s. In other countries, the same style is called modernism. It would be functional, frugal, cubic spaces and smooth surfaces. The home would be adapted to the family’s needs in order to have a home as well-functioning as possible. The roofs became flat, the facade smooth and without unnecessary decoration.
EXTERIOR DOORS 1930´S
The architecture would prioritize the function, which among other things meant that the front door of the house was not placed centered on the house body but was placed so that the house’s function could be utilized to the maximum. The currently characteristic cube-like villa with a white smooth-plastered façade, flat copper roof and green window joinery often had a staircase made of concrete that led up to the house’s front door. The railings of the stairs were in painted wrought iron made of or a plastered arched wall.
